"Crack" is a form of cocaine that has become popular in recent years, partly because it is cheaper than cocaine and partly because it is easily created using household chemicals. This makes the drug readily available and relatively affordable.
Crack is a form of cocaine. During production it is typically mixed with other chemicals. This increases the profitability for the person making the crack. Of course it makes the drug more dangerous to use since the user does not always know what chemicals have been added. Crack is delivered in a crystal form (known as "rocks" in drug slang). These crystals are smoked in pipes and give an effect similar to cocaine - euphoria, and increased energy levels. A high from crack does not last long before the user needs to smoke again.
During an episode of crack abuse an addict may go for several days with very little sleep or food. This can result in physical problems relating to malnutrion and loss of sleep. When compounded with the effect from the chemical itself this can lead to psychological distress. When entering drug treatment for cocaine the medical team will conduct a physical assessment and prescribe a detoxification schedule that takes this into account.
