Phase One

Breaking Down Patterns of Denial

The main themes of this phase are the:

  • Recognition of alcohol / chemical addiciton as a disease
  • Recognition of consequences of this addiction to self and others
  • Acceptance of powerlessness and unmanageability

Primary Goals

  • Successful detoxification
  • General understanding of the 12 step program
  • Complete and relate (with examples of behaviour) up to step 3
  • Introduction to 12 step support groups
  • Understanding the roles of counselor and sponsor
  • Ability to identify the consequences of abusing substances

  • Goal setting on daily basis
  • Implementing plans, taking instructions and following through on tasks
  • Learning to evaluate self and others
  • Taking responsibility for self and others
  • Investing in personal leadership
  • Becoming role models to new patients
  • Refining and mastering interpersonal skills (acceptance of differences, communication, and conflict management)
  • Understanding relapse patterns and establishing a recovery plan
  • Active contribution to monitoring and assisting in groups (AA/NA adediction and therapeutic)
  • Taking initiative for personal growth
  • Complete steps 7-12
