THE RECOVERY PROCESS: AN OVERVIEW
TRANSITION
This includes giving up the need to use, recognizing the loss of control, analyzing presenting problems, identifying denial patterns and introducing AA Steps
STABILIZATION
Recuperation from the damage of addiction, dealing with withdrawal, learning to change the pre-occupation with chemicals, learning non-addictive ways of dealing with stress and the development of hope and the motivation to change.
EARLY RECOVERY
Improving understanding and acceptance. Understanding the role of addiction in life, the purpose of life, addiction stories and integrating.
MIDDLE RECOVER
Achieving lifestyle balance (diet, consumption of cigarettes and coffee, resolving feelings of letdown, repairing damage, and integrating).
LATE RECOVERY
Building depth and meaning in life, freeing self from family problems, learning about dysfunction in the family, identifying problems in late recovery and self-help options.
MAINTENANCE
Learning how to enjoy the possibilities of a new life, maintaining a recovery program, continual growth and development, coping with changes and complications, coping with stumbling blocks in recovery and integrating AA steps 10-12.
THE PROCESS OF TREATMENT


Stage 1
Recognition of alcoholism or drug dependency, acceptance of unmanageable nature of one's own life. Recognition of dishonest with self and others.

Stage 2
Recognition of the need to change past behaviour and attitudes. Recognition of the ability to change, and that the programme is the vehicle for change.

Stage 3
A commitment made to change. Observation and identification of changes. Modification in the need to control others.
